Fibers Operations SME

This position will report to the Manager, Fibers Solutions Group

Location: Loveland, OH (Incumbent can work remotely with extensive travel required)

Technology Subject Matter Experts (SME) use expertise and leadership gained through years of experience to deliver improvement within the manufacturing system. The duties vary widely between practicing safety leadership, troubleshooting, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, equipment and process studies and audits. A key component of a Subject Matter Expert's job is to transfer knowledge and skills to mill personnel to build on-site capability.

The Subject Matter Expert position is accountable for delivering results on a wide range of assignments, short and long-term, across our global mill system. The SME must work well with varied teams and be able to quickly engage employees from all levels of the organization from executive to the shop floor, and influence vendors and contractors. A SME has the ability, communication skills, and presence to influence all levels of the organization from bottom to top. A SME works largely independently, executing change within the area of expertise, and able to influence even very large projects. A SME remains aware of and incorporates changes within the area of expertise into skill set quickly and automatically. A SME is globally astute and generally effective communicating and influencing even in facilities outside the native language. A SME is a generator of ideas and catalyst of change and value creation.

Scope:

The Subject Matter Expert position functions as an internal consultant, and is expected to develop projects and produce improvement in the fiber line area anywhere in the company. The duties range widely between safety leadership, troubleshooting, optimization, teaching, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, process audits, strategic studies, and mentoring. Performance measurements include:

  • Ability to contribute to, and deliver improving safety results, with a specific emphasis in the area of expertise
  • Ability to rapidly and accurately diagnose and resolve operating malfunctions, either onsite and or remotely
  • Reduction in consumption of direct raw materials, energy, and labor.
  • Improvement in production, reliability, availability and quality above historical limits and to world-class levels
  • Ability to interface with and technically develop and mentor others within the area of expertise
  • Ability to drive results and self-manage priorities on multiple simultaneous projects

    Key Competencies:

    The SME is a self-directed individual, and as such needs a wide array of leadership, functional/technical and organizational skills. Key examples include:

    Leadership/managerial competencies

  • Interpersonal Savvy - This position interacts with all levels of the company, across the cultures and languages within IP operations. The individual must adapt as the situation requires and maintain positive outcomes.
  • Learning on the Fly & Problem Solving - This person is the expert within their area of specialization. As new or unique situations are encountered, they must self-develop technical skills as the situation dictates.
  • Presentation & Communication Skills - This person must employ strong verbal and written skills in the rapid communication of issue resolution and new opportunity development.
  • A SME can organize, lead, and manage teams to solve specific problems within the area of expertise from inception through sustainable solution. Thought process can extends problem application from the local to the enterprise.
  • A SME is able to influence effectively all levels of the organization, executing managerial courage and relating to the floor level to guide solutions to the best result for the enterprise. Communication skills are good in most situations, with stakeholder management effective.

    Functional/Technical competencies

  • Process - Expert in one or more areas of the fiber line including
    • Pulping (Batch and Continuous)
    • Brown Stock Washing
    • O2 Delignification
    • Knotting and screening
    • Pulp bleaching
    • Caustic plant and lime kiln
  • Engineering - Experienced in fundamentals of engineering needed for process or equipment design and knowledgeable of the capital process to at least a moderate level.
  • Operations - Familiar in the development of operating procedures and policy.
  • Contributes to, and delivers improving safety results, with a specific emphasis in the area of expertise
  • Capable of being the lead SME for cost savings improvement teams; evaluate operational data, identify cost reduction projects and develop high level capital and cost savings estimates.
  • Within subject matter, wide range of process knowledge backed by relevant/extensive mill level problem solving experiences with proven ability to enable support/consultation to other technology teams.
  • The success of the position is highly dependent on productivity while maintaining credibility. The SME must balance discipline around engineering hypothesis (or model) validation with experienced judgment.
  • Nearly all the SME's work will be collaborative. Effectively communicating to other team members and leveraging their expertise is a key aspect of the role. Likewise, effective communication to internal customers and bringing clarity to complex issues is a key challenge.
  • Directly influences profitability impact annually from among the following
    • Reduction in consumption of direct raw materials, energy, and labor.
    • Improvement in production, reliability, availability and quality
  • The position is physically and personally demanding, requiring travel of 70-85%. Short-term, high priority projects may require intermittently high work hours.
  • Operation and performance improvement with the use of bench marking and best practice sharing
  • Capable of system evaluations and onsite support in a secondary role.

    Minimum qualifications:

  • The applicant will possess at least 5 years of experience in operations and service within the area of expertise
  • The applicant will be capable of supporting extensive domestic and international travel requirements, and providing process technical support on a business priority basis. The normal travel is from 70-85% of the time.

    Pulping and Fiber Line Expertise:

  • The Fibers Solutions group provides operation, process and engineering technical assistance to International Paper's mills worldwide.
  • Provides technical expertise for pulping and fiber line operating areas, mechanical and engineering support for all fibers unit operations
